A WRITTEN TESTIMONY – JAY ELECTRONICA / JAY Z

This Jay Electronia feels like some throwback shit and ultimately it’s why I like it a lot.

It reminds me of Black Star, Dogg Food, and indie rap like Project Blowed. Hell, “Universal soldier” is basically an Aceyalone reference. It reminds me of Funcrusher Plus. The beats are fire, they remind me of the best parts of Nasir and Hip-Hop is Dead.

Jay Z brings real effort and fun with wordcraft to these verses and Electronica lives up to his decade of hype with deft raps, good rapping, and really wonderful work with references and multis.

I feel like indie rap makes this album every week but that doesn’t take anything away from how well-executed this is. We’ve seen many people attempt mixtapey edited up collab projects like this over the last 25 years in hip-hop but who else pulled it off like this? Not that many.
