APOCALIT NOW – RICHARD BLACKSHER
Updated: Sep 17
I’m a sucker for emotionally evocative chords played by deft ensembles so this project has my number. Both of the main singles “Goodbye Mary” and “Leap Down (remix)” with Aye Sincere are great examples of how transcendent Blacksher knows how to make life’s daily breezy moments feel when he filters them through his sense of keys, programming and compositions.
The song “Cool World” is another example of how this guy knows how to play your heart strings with the keyboard. Most of the songs have an almost Timothy Leary or Richard Linklater “Waking Life”-esque philosophy talk intermittently returning throughout the project to add to its intellectual and arty ambiance. "No Dinero, No Seguro" plays with hip-hop, dance music and big band rock-jazz vibes. The rhythm-heavy “Trashmen” features a posthumous verse from the IE’s beloved Faja the Poet as well as Jonny Pickett, all having an interesting poetic time playing with the “men are trash” meme.
For me this EP is an appetizing and effective introduction to this lateral and profound melodic mind; can’t wait to hear more- tap in!
