BILLY MILLY - TuiDaShark
Updated: Aug 5, 2019
One of the main reasons I plan to follow TuiDaShark’s trajectory as closely as possible in the coming years is he evolves quickly, doesn’t waste time and takes careful pains to move as smartly as possible. When I first met him he was like a psychedelically eccentric battler who really fucked with me and now with this new album Billy Milly he is showing everyone that he’s one of the Orange County area’s sharpest MCs period as well as an honorable dude who is about his business. Listening to this record has me thinking I’ve not paid enough attention as to who Orange County’s dopest actually ARE despite playing a lot of shows there in the last two years in particular. One such name I have to add to that list is Tui’s – his rap persona is flamboyantly braggadocious but also smartly down to earth. His flows are flawless, his rhymes and phrases are always original and still musical in their complexity. He has a lot of lines that make one pause in appreciation.
“Gods don’t wear crowns”
A major theme of the record is Tui showing why it was stupid to sleep on him and he proves it over and over. Flava Beats' production is polished, banging gives a consistent vibe of wilin’ out appropriately matched to Tui’s virtuoso MCing. The album motif of Billy Madison is a fun side of Tui- a colorful transgressive but ultimately versatile and earnest artist. He can sing with gusto, make pop-ready choruses, and lord can he spit verses- as far as debut exhibition projects, this record checks of all the boxes and I look forward to what he’ll say next now that he knows that we know that he’s coming and bringing his city with him on the merit of his formidable pen and tongue.
