GOLD ROSES (RICK ROSS & DRAKE) FIRST THOUGHTS
“you saying let me finish/ but I ain’t tryna hear it” – drake, “gold roses”
Every once in a while you hear some shit and just feel vindicated- that’s how I feel about “Gold Roses” which for me is another song about dudes sipping champagne on their balcony looking out at the city having vague thoughts of discontent but I’m sure I’m being glib. Anyway, what’s vindicating about hearing this song for me is that it supports this idea I’ve always pushed about the styles of music that are musical comfort food and this kind of post-boom-bap early 2000s style hip-pop track is a good example. Ross and Drake just sound tired, tryna relax and have a drink as they talk about why the shit other people say isn’t worth their time. The beat is chill and pleasant and the raps are solid, relaxed. Drake can turn a phrase; I get anxiety hearing Ross struggle to breathe but I guess that’s his voice and his rhymes are breezy multisyllabics that lead into a very familiar sounding story about a woman whose life he is considering changing. The song feels like a good Sunday hangover track as I smoke a bowl and crush last night’s beer cans and I mean that in a good way.
