LA NUBE NEGRA – ORCHID
"satisfy myself as I hold this pen / crucify myself for the souls of men"
I’ve been performing at shows with my fellow Virgo, Orchid for well over a decade now. She’s always impressed me by being unapologetically poetic, emotional, and fiercely feminine in a male-dominated rap world that can often feel full of meatheads and wannabe gangsters. Her new album La Nube Negra's title translates to "the Black Cloud" and rarely has darkness shined so brightly. Productions from OkSpncr, YonnasXAbraham and Taydex scaffold this offering from our dark phoenix protagonist.
“Rain” is a great example of how she walks the tightrope wire of catering to male gazes with titillating content while absolutely slashing back at a certain patriarchal power construct. “Born Again” is a solid introduction and spoken word style mission statement.
“she’s young and she cute she all about the loot / fuck a motherfucker tryna tell her what to do”
“Selena” is a smart, melodic, catchy fusion of confident sexuality via smoothly rapped verses and sung choruses. Shy Girl explores a vulnerable, intoxicated side of love I think.
“Heroina” is a favorite – uptempo, smart, cocky, Spanglish – what else do you want from her?
“FBC” is another example of how for all her poetic grandeur, she really doesn’t give a fuck and will get as irreverent as you want to get.
At a brief 20 minutes over 7 songs, this EP is a nice tour through her poetic side, her romantic side, her sexual side and her “fuck you” side- not that that’s all there is to her as an artist but I’m saying that’s a good range for an EP. I like what I hear, am glad she doesn’t rush projects because this is clean AF, but am eager for the LP – tap in!
