PLATFORM CUTS – NICKLAUS GRAY
Updated: Oct 18, 2020
Nicklaus is one of those enigmatic polymaths who could do literally anything with art so to see him go in weird, nerdy, and neurotic directions is a delight for someone like me.
He fixates on his tendency to fixate, his obsession with muses, his political anger and rants. He’s letting us in, it’s brilliant singing and rapping and it’s just wild how straightforward that is. All the while he’s giving us all this over top-notch productions from Oh Gosh Leotus, Kaelin Ellis and himself. It took multiple listens to fully get what he was doing melodically on the fluttering R & B indie rock tune “Glow”. Archer’s feature is nice as hell of course. My brain got hot listening to his anti-Trump album-ending manifesto “Final Thoughts”.
His work always successfully convinces me that it’s the musical translation of his own over-thinking and sensitivity and when a recording performer is as deft an artist as he is, that’s easy to appreciate on a record like this – check it out.
