SEARCHING FOR CARTER DEEMS JOURNAL 3
I watch this guy on my desktop in my den while smoking and snacking and I laugh and just say out loud “Christ this guy is so good”. I often feel like he’s a product designed just for me and can’t even believe that he, a rapper so challenging and perfect, exists.
The first batches of Deems battles I saw Deems would be pitted against brawler face-stomper tough guys who he quickly humiliated. The next section of battles of his I watched (curated by Versetracker, thanks guys) he was like typecast by bookers as the nerdy guy and he kept getting put against other funny nerdy guys that while over-all were amusing paled in comparison to Deems’savvy. He’ll charm you and disarm you mid-battle NOT with the nice guy shtick, though that’s its own discussion, but with his love of language. MCs can smell it on other MCs and more importantly hear it and that’s how Deems wins over many of his opponents outside of the obvious humor factor. Sometimes it seems so easy for him that it's disgusting because he sweats vocab, because he reads. This is kind of simple in that way but I digress.
In the stretch I’m at now, culminating with this battle with Denter of EGY, Carter has brought back the best of all of his lessons as king nerd and is spitting with ever more confidence, elegance and most importantly originality against just really really dope MCs like Denter, who has some fantastic schemes. So they put him against the tough guys, the other funny geeks and then the wordsmiths, the vocab guys….who will stop him? Who will they put him up against next? Find out in the next installment of “Tanjint Wiggy: searching 4 carter deems”.
