SEARCHING FOR CARTER DEEMS JOURNAL 6

Between our last installment and now I saw Carter do a bunch of 2017 on-beat freestyle battles. His agility off-top is wild and is lowkey his secret weapon. The way this last guy is just confounded by not only Carter’s style but by the response Carter gets is priceless.

This team battle with Quest and Marv versus Carter and Chedda Cheese is another triumph in Carter’s evolution. Quest and Marv aren’t going to make the same mistakes other tough guys have made in the past of ignoring the ways Deem tilts the paradigm. Matter of fact Marv seems like a nerd in a good way, in the way that I like. Quest opens the battle with getting the “hug” with Carter out of the way which I thought was brilliant but again telling. Brilliant because this absolutely is one of Carter’s moves to sow confusion, to defuse tension, to build up to- by “getting it out of the way” Quest forces Carter to have other weapons ready, defuses possible tension, robs Carter of a build-up moment, and makes him look more game and willing than and different from many of Carter’s other opponents.

The whole battle is quite good, everyone involved delivers but the next moment that really struck me was when Quest goes on a rant about “fuck cats, I’ll punch cats” making fun of Carter’s love of felines. It’s a glorious moment of absurdist theater where a couple tough guy rappers utterly concede the whole battleground to the weird nerd. And it was still their best move- they didn’t have a choice! Any attempt to ignore or brush off Carter’s weirdness and Chedda’s sharp nerdiness would make it bigger than the room. These guys lost before they begun but they put up a good fight and used Marv’s nerdiness well. When Carter has other rappers singing about cats and funny stuff too- he’s controlling the whole chessboard, your dumb white and pedo jokes notwithstanding.

This has been one of main curiosities as I do this series- at first, how does a dumb macho world react to him, how does it metabolize him, what does that look like years in etc. Good stuff team, see y'all soon.
