SEARCHING FOR CARTER DEEMS PART II
So while I haven't really learned more about his background or anything like that, I've been watching more of this dude's old battles and found myself really moved as I watched this one with Joe Cutter where more than any of the ones I'd seen prior he threw himself into characters, physical gags, interaction...and with an opponent who wasn't boring macho trash. It was a master class but beyond that it was transcendent to see artists effortlessly injecting comedy into high-level battle rap.
These are the moments I think that help solidify the legend of this dude in my mind- when I started to sample his work a few years ago this is the kind of thing I thought he might have in his catalog and now to see that I'm maybe not even halfway thru all the old vids of his bouts and I'm already seeing hilarious idiosyncratic work like this makes me really excited for what I'm going to see as I get into his later eras, do some more research on dude's background and start taking away some larger conclusions about his really singular, in my opinion so far anyway, work.
