SHOULDA DUCK’D EP – NICKLAUS GRAY
Updated: Jan 9
The new EP from Nicklaus Gray is a pretty astounding and human piece of work.
It reminds me both of his crewmate Tru Speech’s Getting Out of Bed Is Hard and of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. The former in its brief but effective communication of a milieu, a concept and story. The latter in its vulnerable play with male sexuality and love.
Almost fully produced by himself (track 5 by Oh Gosh Leotus) the album explores a high school paradigm that reminds me of Into the Spider-Verse in its youthful emotionality and vibey r&b hip-hop tone. Gray explores a high school love triangle and the confusion of social intimacy as it grows and is tugged in multiple directions at once. It’s too short for me to spoil more than that for you, headphones this one and then bump it again in the car. Listen out for that 03 Greedo style closer.
