There’s so much to love about We Are Skywalkers’ new record.
"Scrooge McDuck my spirit animal when i go for a swim On God Sharp with the wit like en garde Earth in my soul so i'm rock hard Sweet in her mouth like a Pop Tart"
Their work reminds me of Das Racist and Earthgang in its linguistically acrobatic adventurousness and unapologetic weirdness but also of something entirely new- something wiser and more in love with language, something proudly regionally political. Filled with skits, with help from Tony Asar and Faahz, celebrating the mythology of the intersection of Pomona and Common Ground artists, the album itself adds to that lore. Not that this is a requirement or anything but the album has nerdculture influence all over it, most nakedly on “Shonen Jump”. Olivia Leoria provides refreshing energy and helps close the album out with her guest spot on “Woke Up”.
With knockers from SatiliteRoc, BurninGiraph, KT the Terrible and Ichiban Don, the production is impeccable; the beats are all wonderful soundbeds for our heroes to express over. The topic matter is thought-provoking and playful, sometimes deep but it never gets too heavy which I appreciate.
“They say we’re week but Rome wasn’t made in a day”
A week and a half ago when I first listened through I tweeted that no one could have predicted how good this new project was going to be. All I mean by that is who the fuck can predict a perfect record? I’ve liked all their work from before and see those records as self-evident documentation of their obvious talents but this new album transmits a vibe that I would call their most alluring yet.
